Stamp Out Hunger! Mailbox Food Drive was a success!
The Stamp Out Hunger! program, conducted on Saturday May 8th, was a tremendous success. Final results show that United Way's involvement helped boost the amount of food collected by 36 percent. This year, with our help, Gainesville collected an additional 37,000 pounds of food bringing our total to 138,878 pounds for Alachua County. Thanks to everyone who helped us Stamp Out Hunger!
Weekend Hunger Backpack Program
The Weekend Hunger Backpack Program identifies chronically hungry children on the free/reduced lunch program that are in need of nutritional assistance over the weekend. Backpacks are filled during the week to be taken home on Friday with enough food for the child and his siblings and brought back Monday morning. Research has shown that hungry children do not have the capacity for normal learning and play; they demonstrate extreme deficits on standardized outcome measures related to academic performance and completion of school.
More information about the program can be found here.
Exceptional Food Drive Efforts:
The University of Florida Rotaract hosted a canned food drive for United Way, collecting over 170 pounds of food for the program.
AvMed Health Plans collected over 12,000 food and book items as part of their "We, Not Me" How I Live United 2009 campaign, helping them to earn a 2009 Inspiring Success Award.
O2B Kids! collected over 1200 pounds of food in their Live United 2009 campaign, all to be donated to the Weekend Hunger Backpack Program.
