The United Way of North Central Florida has an unpaid internship available based in Gainesville on a semester basis with flexible hours. 

This internship allows interns to gain experience through:

  • Writing, editing and designing a wide variety of communications tools
  • Planning and executing special events
  • Developing and executing comprehensive marketing/communications plans for specific target audiences

Interns must have strong writing, editing, computer and communications skills. 

Successful interns leave with strong writing skills, experience with events, knowledge of media and with a strong portfolio of written materials.

Intern Job Title: Community Impact Assistant

Job Description: The Community Impact internship is an opportunity that allows the intern to work with a variety of ordinary citizens including prominent business leaders, policy makers, faith-based community representatives, and social service, education, and health agency directors and staff to gain meaningful professional experience in resource development, community investment, and community impact activities such as volunteer recruitment and the Success By 6 initiative.

Objectives and Duties:

  • Increase knowledge about the non-profit world (e.g. daily events, issues programs)
  • Learn how to align resource development (dollar and time philanthropy) and resource distribution to achieve maximum impact in non-profit settings 
  • Learn how to create effective needs assessments and surveys
  • Learn how to create opportunities for collaboration/networking among non-profit agencies and donors
  • Develop skills in grant writing
  • Learn about United Way initiatives to create long-lasting change and to prevent problems from happening in the first place
  • Function as a positive and contributing member of the UW team
  • Develop skills that will assist in future career path/goals


Duties of Student:

  • Collaborate with United Way staff members on strategies/initiatives to impact the community
  • Engage and build relationships with diverse community stakeholders including investors, volunteers, and social service agency representatives
  • Research and coordinate specific projects that help support the United Way initiatives , e.g. book drives, tutoring initiatives, health initiatives, grant opportunities
  • Develop and distribute community need assessments and surveys that will identify community goals, concerns, gaps, and surpluses
  • Participate in community-based information fairs/events
  • Participate in Research Council, Impact Council, Community Solutions Team, and Campaign meetings
  • Assist with maintaining a data-base of community impact partners, donors, and research indicators


Salary: Accountability to the public has been United Way’s strongest suit. Each year, volunteers and unpaid interns work together in a massive civic endeavor to raise funds that are allocated to local agencies and to coordinate community-based volunteer efforts. Through effective volunteer management, costs are kept low and financial outlays are kept to a minimum, thus insuring that the community receives maximum benefit from its contributions. We do not have the capacity to pay our interns at this time.

Approximate Hours Per Week: Flexible, semester-based, typically 10-20
