Stamp Out Hunger! - Saturday, May 8th

In recent years, a hunger epidemic has swept the nation.

The number of food insecure Americans jumped from 36.2 million in 2007 to 49.1 million in 2008, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. One in four was a child.

The Stamp Out Hunger! program is a national initiative developed to replenish food banks leading up to the summer months, a time when they are typically low in stock.

Making a difference is as simple as a stroll to the mailbox.

Local residents can help fight hunger by leaving a bag of non-perishable food at their mailboxes on Saturday, May 8. A letter carrier will pick up the donation and deliver it to a food pantry, where it will be distributed to those who need it most in the community.

Stamp Out Hunger!, the nation’s largest single-day food drive, aims to reach 1 billion pounds in donations this year, something it has worked toward since its inception in 1993.  More than 10,000 cities across the U.S. will participate in the event, which is organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers.
