Weekend Hunger Backpack Program

The program identifies chronically hungry children who are in need of nutritional assistance over the weekend. Backpacks are filled during the week to be taken home on Friday with enough food for the child and his/her siblings during the weekend. Last year, 40 families with 140 children were provided with backpacks filled with food each Friday. The program has expanded to five local elementary schools and as of December 31, 2010, has provided 23,136 pounds of food to these families. The pounds of food delivered are equivalent to 18,075 meals or $34,704 worth of food.

Community Research and Case for Giving

We need Organizations and Companies to Sponsor our program! The Weekend Hunger Backpack initiative is off to a great start, but without a network of dedicated, large groups of volunteers to help fundraise, conduct food drives, and assist with volunteer coordination, we have no way to expand and enhance the program.
