Tocqueville Society
The United Way Tocqueville Society is a leadership and recognition society established in 1984 to recognize and honor individuals who contribute $10,000 and more to their local United Way.
For whom was the United Way Tocqueville Society named?
French aristocrat Alexis de Tocqueville was 26 when he came to America in 1831. As he traveled all over the young nation, he keenly examined American society. His observations formed the basis of Democracy in America, a detailed study of American society and politics, published in two volumes, in 1835 and 1840.
Perhaps his most important observation was that Americans helped each other in times of need. He recognized, applauded and immortalized the voluntary spirit that lives in American’s heart. He wrote, “When an American asks for the cooperation of his fellow citizens, it is seldom refused; and I have often seen it afforded spontaneously and with good will.”
