Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program
United Way of North Central Florida is working in collaboration with the East Gainesville Development Corporation and University of Florida Law School to expand and enhance our local VITA program. VITA is Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. Volunteers are trained to assist low income working families to file their taxes, more specifically apply for the EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit).
Approximately 10-20 percent of North Central Florida residents eligible for this tax credit do not file, an average return is about $2,000--- that’s hundreds of thousands of dollars earmarked that could be returned back into our community. We also know that 60-70 percent of those who are filing for the EITC in North Central Florida are utilizing a paid preparer or paying interest on Refund Anticipation Loans, losing a significant portion of their tax return.
