VITA Program funded by IRS to support the EITC; offers free training and free tax prep and filing for local residents
GAINESVILLE, Nov. 29 - - United Way of North Central Florida is in need of volunteers to help with their Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
United Way is currently looking for individuals interested in becoming IRS-Certified VITA tax return preparers for the 2013 tax season. Tax preparation assistance is offered Jan. through mid-April 2013 in the six counties United Way of North Central Florida serves: Alachua, Bradford, Dixie, Gilchrist, Levy and Union.
Free online and in-person training will be offered to all volunteers. Previous tax preparation experience is not required. The next classroom training course is being offered Dec. 3-6 at the University of Florida, UF Fisher School of Accounting in Gerson Hall, Room #122, from 6–8:30 p.m. each night. Volunteers are provided with training workbooks and additional information at the training session, and must pre-register online at www.VITAvolunteer.com. Arrangements can be made for remote training and testing if the training location is not convenient.
Volunteers are also needed to be greeters during site operations, and these positions only require limited training.

The VITA Program is an opportunity for low to moderate-income families (annual household income of $51,000 or less) to have their taxes prepared and filed by a certified preparer, free of charge.
