GAINESVILLE, FL (January 28, 2016) —United Way of North Central Florida is pleased to announce Norinda Yancey as the Director of Community Impact. Yancey is currently the Education and School-Based Initiatives Manager – a position she has held at the agency since August 2013. Her promotion is effective February 1, 2016.
Originally hired to oversee Check & Connect, UWNCFL’s dropout prevention program that targets at-risk youth enrolled at Gainesville, Hawthorne and East Side high schools, Yancey has managed several significant community collaborations at UWNCFL with AmeriCorps VISTA, the US Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots, Book Nook and more.
“It is always a joy to be able to promote qualified staff to positions within the agency that allow for professional growth and greater contributions to our mission,” said UWNCFL President & CEO Deborah Bowie. “Norinda has a strong track record as an educator and reading specialist and will transition well as a liaison to one of our most important endeavors in building and managing our community investment process.”
The director works with volunteers to build a successful portfolio of programs best suited in the region to improve education, financial stability and health for area residents, Bowie said. Having a staff member already familiar with those agencies and their programs also played a factor in the decision, she added.
Prior to her time with United Way of North Central Florida, Yancey was a middle school teacher in Sarasota. Yancey will immediately transition into her new role to assist in the 2017-2019 grant cycle that opened earlier this month. She replaces Jennifer Stojkovic, who relocated to San Francisco, California, in January.
“I am honored and excited to be a part of this worthwhile process,” said Yancey.
“I don’t think there is a better place for me than at the United Way and specifically, in this new role. I am elated to be part of a greater mission to help improve the lives of people living right here, and feel privileged to do the work we do everyday,” Yancey said.
