Small Business Spotlight- Eat the 80

Chris (Boris) Marhefka and Carlee Daylor, Founders and Owners of Eat the 80

1.  Tell us about your business, and what is your business philosophy?
Eat the 80 is Gainesville’s premiere healthy meal delivery service. At Eat the 80, we believe in the power of healthy eating. We're talking fresh and quality farm to table ingredients, no preservatives, and both paleo and vegan friendly options. We believe that when you fuel your body properly, you will feel better, look better, and perform better.

2.  Why are you passionate about your commitment to United Way's Community Investment Fund?
Giving back to the community is one of the core values of our business. United Way was the best way for us to know that the money we donate will stay in the community and help such fantastic local non-profits that are already vetted for you. Not to mention that each dollar donated gets matched at least 3 times over, meaning that the money donated has the power to make such a difference. I chose to live in Gainesville after I graduated because I saw how truly remarkable the community of Gainesville is. United Way is the avenue that lets me keep my city great, while also helping it to constantly improve.

3.  What is something interesting or surprising that most people don't know about you?
As the owner of a healthy meal delivery company, I think people assume I was always really healthy. However, I didn’t always eat so well. Growing up, I ate what I now call “fake healthy”. Lean cuisines, low fat snacks, and other additive filled junk were the basis of my food pyramid.

It took me waking up one day and saying “I’m tired of feeling terribly” before I was ready to make a change. Along with the mentoring from my fiancé Boris, and the drive I had to help myself and others get healthier, I made the leap of faith to start Eat the 80.

4.  What would your older self tell your younger self?
I absolutely love this quote from Diana Nyad, a record setting swimmer at the age of 64. “You are never too old to live your dreams.” This really resonated with me because I almost didn’t start Eat the 80 out of fear of failing. I was scared that I didn’t have any business background, and that I had already chosen another career path. However, I feel that this quote makes sense to people of all ages, whether you are younger, or in later years. It really is never too late to have everything you’ve ever wanted. You just have to try.

5. Favorite quote?
Another favorite quote of mine is from Richard Branson, “If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later!” It goes right along with what Diana said. Go out there and chase your dreams no matter what age because we all deserve to be happy!
